Sprinkles Cupcakes, known for its delectable treats and its signature cupcake ATMs, has closed, founder Candace Nelson announced.
Instead of ringing in the new year with more joyous news, Nelson surprised her followers by announcing on social media Dec. 31 that Sprinkles abruptly closed all its locations.
“Today is Sprinkles’ final day,” she wrote in the caption of her post.
“Two days ago, I learned that Sprinkles Cupcakes, the company I started in 2005 and then sold to private equity in 2012, will be closing its bakery doors today,” she shared in a video message posted on Instagram. “Just to say that out loud is completely surreal.”
Nelson said although she sold her business 13 years ago, she still felt a personal connection to it and didn’t imagine that it would ever shutter operations.
“I thought Sprinkles would keep growing and be around forever. I thought it was going to be my legacy,” she continued.
In the caption, Nelson said she has had “no ownership or operational involvement in the company” since it was sold.
While the Sprinkles Cupcakes website is still up, the company’s Instagram page is no longer available. TODAY.com has reached out to Sprinkles Cupcakes about the closures and the status of its cupcake ATMs around the country.
Customers recently flocked to the company’s first bakery location in Beverly Hills to purchase their last cupcakes before closing, NBC News Los Angeles reported.
In her post, Nelson said she is grateful for all the joy the baked goods brought to customers across the country. She also said she will share some of her favorite Sprinkles memories on social media over the next few weeks.
Nelson encouraged customers to leave comments with their Sprinkles Cupcakes memories, too.
“I built this company as a point of joy and connection, and I hope to honor that. So share your favorite Sprinkles memory below,” she said.
She provided more details about Sprinkles’ founding in the caption, writing that the company began with “a KitchenAid mixer and a big idea.”
“Over the years, we expanded across the country and launched the Cupcake ATM,” she added.
She expressed her gratitude to the customers and said she was thinking of the Sprinkles employees who are now unemployed.
