Subway wants you to stop by its hoagie-production line before you hit the gym.
On Sept. 10, Subway announced the return of its Fresh Fit menu, which includes four new sandwiches with 20 grams or more of protein, a full serving of vegetables and fewer than 500 calories in a six-inch.

The suite of salubrious sandwiches become available nationwide on Sept. 17 and are made to order on multigrain bread:
- Grilled Chicken & Avocado ($8.31) features grilled chicken, smashed avocado, lettuce, spinach, tomatoes, cucumbers, red onions and smoky Baja Chipotle sauce, with 35 grams of protein.
- Ham & Turkey Stacker ($6.91) contains oven-roasted turkey and Black Forest ham, lettuce, spinach, tomatoes, cucumbers, red onions and yellow mustard, with 20 grams of protein.
- Seasoned Steak & Avocado ($7.33) combines steak, smashed avocado, lettuce, spinach, tomatoes and red onions, with 35 grams of protein.
- Turkey & Ranch Delite ($8.87) piles on oven-roasted turkey, lettuce, spinach, tomatoes, red onions and a drizzle of Peppercorn Ranch, with 26 grams of protein.
“With the return of Fresh Fit to Subway’s menu,” says Paul Fabre, SVP of Global Culinary and Innovation at Subway, “our guests can feel confident that there is a convenient, delicious option crafted for them at a great price — and one their macros will love even more.”
In 2007, Subway launched its Fresh Fit menu, which touted sandwiches with less calories and fat. This health-minded shift proved so successful for the company that it made an estimated $500 million in revenue that year and even became a plot line in “Austin Powers in Goldmember” when villain Fat Bastard loses a significant amount of weight thanks to the “Subway diet.”
This go-round, the sandwich chain is leaning into proteinmaxxing, the health trend that has driven food companies to pack protein into everything from frozen pizza to ice cream, candy bars to lemonade, and water to popcorn.
Earlier this month, Starbucks announced its cafes in the U.S. and Canada will permanently offer Protein Cold Foams, along with a line of Protein Lattes made with protein-boosted 2% milk, starting Sept. 29.
