S’mores are the official snack of summer, and just when you thought they couldn’t get any better, we’ve stuffed them into snack-sized cookie bags and made them a transportable feast. A sweet spin on the other campfire classic, the Frito Pie (AKA a walking taco), this newest version of s’mores is my latest excuse to stock up on milk chocolate bars and burn—ahhhh! roast—marshmallows over a campfire.
Tips and tricks:
Walking s’mores are wicked simple to make, but like all simple recipes, the littlest things make a big difference in how delicious the results can be. Here are my tips for getting the most out of your walking s’mores adventures.
- Open the long side of the bag. Most of us open a snack-size cookie bag by ripping open the top, or the short side. In this case, however, it’s better to rip open one of the long sides. This gives you a wider opening to stuff the marshmallows into—and it’s also easier to get at the s’mores that way.
- Layer the marshmallows between the cookies and chocolate. The first time I made this, I tried adding the chocolate to the bag, then adding the toasty marshmallows and mixing the whole thing together—that was a big mistake. Somehow, the marshmallows stuck to the walls of the bag more than anything else, and everything got super messy super quickly. On the other hand, sandwiching the marshmallows between two layers of cookies and chocolate eliminates the mixing step and allows you to enjoy little bites of everything together in a less messy way.
- Wait 30 seconds before enjoying. I know—you want to eat that walking s’mores the minute the marshmallows go into the bag. But hear me out. If you dig in immediately, the chocolate won’t have a chance to soften and melt, and you’ll just have hard chunks of Hershey bar with your gooey marshmallow. Waiting even 30 seconds allows the heat of the marshmallow to melt the chocolate, leading to the ultimate gooey s’mores experience we all know and love.

Ingredients
-
- Step 1Tear or cut bags open down one of its long sides (this isn’t the typical way, but having a larger open pocket is helpful for making and eating these s’mores). Remove half of cookies; set aside. Add 2 chocolate pieces to each bag.
- Step 2Stack 2 marshmallows on a long metal roasting stick or skewer. Toast over a campfire, watching closely, to desired doneness (you can also broil them depending on the season).
- Step 3Make sure marshmallows are NOT on fire. Using a fork (or one of the reserved cookies!), push marshmallow off roasting stick into bag. Top with 1 chocolate piece and reserved cookies. Repeat with remaining bags.
- Step 4Let s’mores sit 30 seconds to 1 minute to let heat of marshmallow melt chocolate, then serve with forks.
